2. A Journey Through Time: Rediscovering Ancient Cultures and Traditions
Traveling through time is like an epic journey, a journey of discovery filled with unique tales of ancient cultures and traditions. The ancient world was an entirely different place, full of secrets, monuments, concoctions and rites that still intrigue many of us today.
My journey began in Rome, the famous ‘Eternal City’, with a visit to the Colosseum. A symbol of the Roman Empire, its grandeur spoke of the power politics, glory, and strength of its citizens. Accompanied by a guide, I got to experience the different features of the monument as I tread its hallways, retracing the steps of the gladiators.
From Rome, my voyage continued in Greece where I was able to gain insight into the brilliance of an ancient culture. Exploring the streets of Athens, I discovered a plethora of ruins, some old and majestic, others famous and iconic. The famous Acropolis stands tall, a stirring reminder of the accomplishments of a far forgotten era. It felt as if I was embarking on a time machine to another era, seeing a world so different from today’s life.
My next stop was Egypt, home of the Nile river. The Nile river was both a source of life but also death, depending on its waters’ level each year. Everywhere I looked there was evidence of the prolific society that built it — from the Great Pyramid of Giza to the Sphinx and the Valley of the Kings. I was fascinated by the hieroglyphs that documented the different eras of the civilisation.
I also had a unique adventure in India, discovering the Vedic culture. India’s rich cultural heritage mostly stands rooted in old religious beliefs, like Hinduism. The temples I visited revealed an ancient religion that believes in the cycle of life and death. I also experienced a ‘yajna’, a ritual where offerings are given in a holy fire as a form of worship towards gods.
- Rome: Colosseum, Power Politics, Gladiators
- Greece: Acropolis, Ruins, Time Machine
- Egypt: Nile River, Pyramids, Hieroglyphs
- India: Vedic culture, Hinduism, Yajna
Visiting these ancient places provided me with untold stories of the past, bringing the past to life in vivid color. Being exposed to a variety of cultures through both their structures and folk tales has truly been a memorable experience. As I embark on my time journey, I am filled with wonder at the practical and artistic legacy left from these ancient civilizations.
